“Nice one, John!” Caius chirped, beaming at his classmate cum good friend John, as they stepped out of school, “that was the most ingenious trick I’ve ever seen!”
The duo had done a dastardly audacious trick on their discipline master Mr Menon, who was unpopular in the school for being unreasonable and harsh to students. Behing his back he was referred to as "the Happiest Sadist". Not happy that a small boy was driven to tears by Mr Menon today, John quietly left a piece of paper with the words “SPAWN FROM HELL!” on the seat of Mr Menon’s chair.
“Hey John, no one will believe that the usually well-behaved student like you could have come up with such idea! No wonder you manage to get away with it. That’s cool.” Caius said to John.
John just casually shrugged his shoulder and said nothing. While Caius was prattling about his disbelief of John’s luck, John was quietly thinking how he should get his homework done quickly so that he could play his favourite computer game. He knew well enough it was not worthwhile to be blacklisted by teachers. But he loved to have some fun, sometimes.
“Can I borrow your prankster kit for today? I might feel rather bored today.”
John took it out of his pocket and tossed it to Caius.
Just around the corner, they caught sight of Jefferson, the school’s bully who was recently expelled for extortion. He walked with a slouch and wore a dark coat.
Trouble wafted into their noses like a grabage dump.
Jefferson swaggered up to the mischievous duo and demanded brusquely “Give me that.”
The two exchanged a worried look and Cauis said in a tight voice “I don’t have anything to give you.”
Jefferson then said with a mocking tone “Firstly, call me Sir, secondly,” He paused “Just do what do what I say!” Next instant, he blew a hard punch into Cauis’ stomach. Cauis doubled up and started moaning in pain.
Though smaller in build than Jefferson, John hated his friends being bullied. He immediately sprung into action and kicked him in the stomach, followed with a right fist to Jefferson’s jaw.
Intimidated by what he thought was a monster in human’s clothing, Jefferson scuttled away. John stood next to Cauis and helped him to stand up. After a few minutes, they continued their way again, although Cauis was still stinging from the pain from the bruises.
They went to a foodcourt for lunch and discussed what they should do next. After a long debate on whether enjoyment was more important than work, Caius dragged John to look at the new WOW CD game; while John sat nearby grumbling about not having enough time to complete the school work. Eventually, John went along with Cauis as he did not want to disappoint his good friend.
It was almost 8pm by the time they reached Cauis’ home, Caius's mom said questioningly “Weren’t you supposed to be at Iain’s party?”
Caius replied “Shoot! We have to go there now!”
John was puzzled and asked, “We have to go out again, where?”
Caius quickly said “We’ve got to go to Iain’s house NOW! He invited me to his party and he is the MOST popular guy in town! You should see his dad’s huge bungalow!” And he dragged a reluctant John along.
Some time later, the duo arrived at Iain’s house and walked into the house. When Iain saw them come in so late, he disdainfully said “You’re late. You don’t have to come if you don’t fit in here.” Then Iain gave them a cold shoulder and strutted away, probably doing his own unimportant business.
Cauis was as red as an apple while John simply smirked. Then John said calmly to Cauis “He’s the world’s biggest idiot, isn’t he?”
They walked through the party, with tables filled with delicious food and buntings hanging from wall to wall, and talking to fellow pupils. Slowly, both of them walked further and further part, till Cauis suddenly noticed that John was sneakily walking through the kitchen door.
Curious, Cauis chased after him and quietly slid through the door and hid behind the fridge. What he saw shocked him thoroughly; John was sprinkling yellow powder from his prankster kit onto Iain’s birthday cake..
Then when John turned around, Cauis could see the angry look in John’s eyes. He worriedly walked to the cake and tasted some of the powder. He immediately spat it out as it tasted bitter; probably turmeric.
Cauis decided that John had crossed the line, just because Iain was snobbish did not mean that they had the right to ruin his birthday cake. Besides, he did not want to offend Iain.
He thought to himself whether he should try to scrape the powder off, but that would make the cake very ugly and noticeable. Furthermore, he would expect to be humiliated by Iain again!
He decided to himself that there was only one option:
I would confront John later. But for now, I remembered how John had fought off the bully for me this morning. I would tell Iain I did it before he was to be shocked by the powder on the cake.
Falteringly, Cauis walked out of the kitchen with a furrowed brow and a worried mind. He walked towards Iain in a dreamlike state; every thing seemed mute to him. He asked to talk to Iain in a corner and hurriedly muttered what he had done, failing to recognize the raised eyebrows and the disgusted tone of Iain. After that, Cauis did not hear anyone, he just walked to the nearest seat and sat down, wondering if he had done the right thing.
